Description: Video tutorial about adding camera movement with waypoints to HLTV Demos using the built-in editor (so no extra tools are required).
Program/Script: Valve DemoEdit
Ok First of all, our HL2 / Source Readers please directly head on to Source Engine in MovieWiki, you will find all info that you need linked there.

CS 1.6 / CS:CZ users:
If you are new to Valve‘s DemoEdit start of with this video tutorial:

Info: This tutorial explains how to activate Valve‘s DemoEdit in Half-Life 1 / Counter-Strike 1.6 and how to do waypointed camera paths / movement using the CAMPATH event.
The tutorial download contains also the orignal cbble.dem Demo File and the changes made that are shown in the video. I suggest that you watch the tutorial first. The main scene is located near 23:30:00 (min:sec:hundreds). You may use this file and launch CS with -demoedit to learn how the camera paths were done.
Screenshots: Click to enlarge Click to enlarge

Note: to avoid stuttering / lagging campaths type put cl_fixtimerate 0 into your moviemaking.cfg config file and use the proper ex_interp setting (1/updaterate: HLTV usually 0.05-0.1, in-eye usually 0.02-0.05), as described here.

If you are done with that, check out the
DemoEdit Wiki entry which has loads of background informations and if you have still quesitons left or want to discuss DemoEdit then check this forum thread (Which also contains a backup of the old faq in case the Wiki should be down).

Hi,

someone would have to try it out (but you probably need a HL/CS version 1.6 or later). That depends on how the "non-steam" thing works and form which CS 1.6 version it has been made.
If the -demoedit command doesn't work for this version, you can also try typing dem_edit into the console (the CS Beta changelog in January 2003 shown in the video mentioned that they replaced the dem_edit console command by -demoedit).

DemoEdit works by the way probably with all Half-Life (1) based games / mods.

Also it would be interesting to know if such a editor is also in Source, I will ask a clanmate a clanmate that owns source to test if there is similar command (but if someone of you guys owns Source then let us know

If there are any questions regarding this tutorial just post theme here into the comments. I will try to answer them to my best knowledge.

Also if you have found out s.th. new, write an article / make a tutorial or post it into the comments and let the community know, because there is so realy much yet to discover with Half-Life Demoedit!

And get started making nice movies folks!!

hi,

#7 Faestro: you might want to have a look using the -demoedit launchoption and the viewdemo command at the cbble.dem that is included in the rar file (it contains all the changes that I have made to do the scences in the movie (you can save back the changes to the Demo you have made by simply using the Save button)).

Let Half-Life complete the loading of the HLTV demo then the FPS will get better and there will be a message in the console telling the loadign has completed:
"Demo file completely loaded. Disconnected. Automatic connection retry"
This might take one to two minutes or so.

The scene I'll be talking about is located shortly after 23:30, so use the slider to jump to it.
Make sure you have Autodirector and Freelookmode enabled:
Screenshot: http://home.arcor.de/matrixstorm/files/cstrike/hlcs_campath/7_0001.jpg

there you will see a series of CAMPATHs:
Screenshot: http://home.arcor.de/matrixstorm/files/cstrike/hlcs_campath/7_0002.jpg

You will notice that all CAMPATH have set their flags to 0 except the two that have set it to 1, since the whole scene has been splited into two campath series.
Also notice that there are no other events between the CAMPATH events (I have removed them).

Now lets take a look at the split (selecting the camevents and using the modify button):
Screenshot: http://home.arcor.de/matrixstorm/files/cstrike/hlcs_campath/7_0003.jpg

You will notice, that the time and camera position and angle (nearly) are the same. I have done this by jumping to the Campath (click on the event and use the GOTO button) where I needed to cut (since the scene would have to many waypoints otherwise (if this happens there is a console message)). Then I clicked add and selectect Campath event and clicked GetView and Gettime. This produced two Campath events that were the same but both had flags zero. So i selected the lower one of the two and made it's flag to 1 to tell Half-Life this would be a new campath. You can see all this on the 3rd screenshot.

This still results in one (but only one) wrong frame for me. (If you are quick you can notice that at the begining in the movie. when the scene is shown the second time I have cuten this single frame out of the movie).

#6 I heard of "smooth" in CS : Source that would make better travellings than Half Life Demoedit
But I think there isn't such a software for CS 1.6
It's a pity but let's make something good in this way
Thx again

Hi

#9 DrAgOn-_ thanks for sharing the info with us, because this actually allowed to find s.th. usefull in using a wellknown searchengine:

So this is for all people that want to do SOURCE MOVIES:

http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Demo_Recording_Tools
(This is a post in Valve's developer wiki seems to be there since November 2006).

This is NOT for Half-Life 1 / 1.6 Movies since these tools are not there!

However they have nothing for Half-Life 1 and mods / Counter-Strike 1.6 (also that it exists and how to activate it is nowhere mentioned), so I guess we are stuck with the -demoedit that is covered by this tutorial, but it also let's us do rather crazy stuff that wasn't thought that it could be done in 1.6 before!

So it is good to have the -demoedit tutorial since the majority of Movies is still done in Counter-Strike 1.6

What does this FOV stuff do (I suppose you mean the camera event)?

btw. Dragon(?) asked on IRC how to do it if you don't have the spectator HUD because you have removed it with sprites:

If auto director seems to be not enabled (no auto switching) then enter
spec_autodirector
in console to activate it (this command is a toggle).

To activate Free Look mode enter
spec_mode 3
into your console.

No one told us if it works or not yet.

If this version is before January 2003 then you probably will have to use the console command dem_edit instead, see Comment #6

I am sorry, I read FOV.

The depth effect is done using the MIRV Demo tool.
http://www.madabouthats.org/projects/mdt

The MIRV tool is technically a cheat. (So you are using it at your own risk).

If you want to find out more about MIRV read the site or ask people that have used it

#32 I am currently trying to get it to work with TeamFortressClassic, but I have also issues. It seems as if the TFC Mod was compiled with an outdated Half-Life 1 SDK version, that did not contain HLTV Director Module support for the CAMEVENTs yet (developer 2 will show errormessages regarding missing director commands 14 and 15).

However if you know the Movie "APM - The Lastdinosaur 2": you should be able to do such a movie using the MIRV Tool (and the bloom tool from the same author).

Also you might want to try if you can get the CAMERA event to track objects in TFC (see the forum thread for more info about this).

Btw guys if you find out s.th. or have questions that are not directly releated to CAMPATH there is now link to a forum thread (bellow the download links) in this tutorial

German / Deutsch:

Hallo, ich nehme mal an, dass Du Counter-Strike 1.6 meinst:

Bitte stelle immer folgendes sicher:

http://cm.cdhoom.com/index.php?p=forum&category=2&post=291#2_2

---- ----

English / Englisch:

Hello, I asume that you mean Counter-Strike 1.6:

Please always ensure the following:

1. The first CAMPATH has set Flags to 1, all following of a series have set Flags to 0.

2. There must not be any other events left between the CAMPATHs of a series.

3. You have to be in Free-Look mode (free Movement) and AutoDirector must be enabled.

4. You have to play/start the demp already some seconds before the first CAMPATH event and go back into the game with ResumeGame (continue game) or ESC, otherwise the Movement will not be played

5. In one CAMPATH sereies there may be only a maximum of 14-20 CAMPATHs / waypoints.

May be try to get the cbble.dem working first that is supplied with the tutorial in the RAR file, the main scene is located near 23:30:00.
Also enter developer 2 in the console, sometimes there are helpfull error messages.

May be you find s.th. usefull in the German comments at Planet-Videos.com: http://planet-movies.com/index.php?7945#122460

Hey there!

Awesome job on the tutorial, I've been beating my brain to death trying to figure out how they got the free look playdemo to work.

I went so far as trying to use HLTV to playback a demo, connect to the HLTV server and then record another demo while moving through the map... This is much easier and more practical.

But I seem to have a small problem.
After I use CAMPATH, all the players models get switched, like ct's become t's and vice versa. But once we switch over at half, everything returns to normal.

Any tips on how to prevent this or correct the error?

Thanks and keep up the stellar work.

[EDIT]Ten minutes after posting...

God I do this every time, I just went through the FAQ and found the solution to my problem.
Thanks and sorry!

yes of course

(cite from Q: 2.2.1.: )

- make sure you have autodirector enabled (use GUI or the spec_autodirector console command toggle)

- make sure you are in FreeLook mode (use the GUI or the spec_mode 3 console command)

----

pay attention that spec_autodirector is a _toggle_ meaning typing it once switches autodirector on (if it was off before) or off (if it was on before).

the spec_mode 3 is for CS 1.6, if you produce movies in other mods the number might be different

You can do everything that you can do within the spec GUI also by using the console.

PS: If you produce Team Fortress Classic (TFC) movies, then stay tuned for a C-M news coming up (hopefully) soon (this year).

You can use Mirv's depthdump to blur things that are not in focus.

Here is a good tutorial for After Effects:
http://library.creativecow.net/articles/kramer_andrew/dof.php

You can use MDT's detphdump instead of the layer he uses, you also don't need to precompose the depthdump layer in AE, since the data is directly from the file.

http://www.hhg-clan.de/hlae/wiki/index.php?title=Mirv_movie_depthdump

If you have questions PM me or use the forum. This tutorial is not bout MDT / Mirv ; )

Sorry that I might double-post/ask something which has been asked before but I couldn't bother reading all of the questions.

So, what if I have a normal demo and I'm using HLAE to get it in to HLTV-demo, how can I make the campaths then? I tried it with HLAE on, and it didn't seem to work, I set the campaths and stuff, but nothing happened.

Please answer asap! Thanks in advance!

First you should make a backup of your demo, so it won't get messed up.

Then you can set that demo to be treated as an HLTV demo using dem_forcehltv 1, HLAE might come in handy here due to the HLTV fix.

The campath should work then as u know it from HTLVs.

Of course don't expect to have a true HLTV demo then, you will notice many data about players not in sight will be missing.
